NATCHEZ — At the beginning of the week, the Cathedral softball team had no idea it would secure a district championship by the end of the week, but that’s exactly what occurred in a doubleheader Thursday night.

Initially scheduled to play on Monday, Bogue Chitto and Cathedral coaches elected to play a doubleheader Thursday, pitting an undefeated district showdown at Cathedral. With both teams heading into the matchup with 4-0 district records, heavy stakes were on the line, and it looked as though Bogue Chitto was on its way to taking the district title with a 7-4 win against Cathedral.

Because Bogue Chitto won by three runs, Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said he knew his club had to win by more than three, and in the second game of the doubleheader, the bats came alive for the Lady Wave.

“We came out hitting very well,” Blackwell said. “The bottom of our lineup came through, too, which was a great help. Abby Brown was 3-for-4 and Grayson Bryant hit a double. So everybody in our lineup was hitting the ball hard.”

The turning point in the game came when senior Mackenzie Watts hit a two-run home run in the sixth, leading to Cathedral taking the second game 9-3.

“That was the icing on the cake,” Blackwell said.

The six-run margin win gave Cathedral the district title. The Lady Wave are now 11-8 on the season with a 5-1 district record.
