Centreville wins pitcher’s duel over Lady Rams

WOODVILLE — Tori Rouse hit a pair of leadoff triples and scored both times while Ariana Bigner pitched herself out of a few jams when she needed to as the Centreville defeated Wilkinson County Christian 3-0 Monday night.

This was a key game for both teams with first place on the line in MAIS District 5-AA. And on this night, it was the visiting Lady Tigers who came up with key two-out hits while the host Lady Rams did not.

“We just got some timely hitting. We had solid defense. And we got good pitching from Ariana,” Centreville head coach Mark Mann said.

Centreville jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Ashton Crum doubled with two outs to bring in Renee Miley. The first of Rouse’s two triples came in the top of the fourth inning and she later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Haley Mann.

Rouse then led off the top of the sixth inning and scored on a WCCA’s only error of the game — again with two outs — to make it a 3-0 game.

While Bigner allowed just two hits and struck out six in the game, she walked five batters. That gave the Lady Rams opportunities to put runs on the board. Instead, Bigner was helped by some outstanding defense that kept the opposition frustrated — and shut out.

“They had a couple of opportunities to score runs and luckily for us it didn’t happen for them,” Mann said. “They had second and third with two outs a couple of times and couldn’t get that two-out hit.”

Bethany Fletcher did her best to keep WCCA in the game as she, just like Bigner, went all seven innings. Fletcher gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two.

“They’re solid. They’ve got good pitching,” Mann said.
