SEBASTOPOL — Cathedral’s defense had no answer for Sebastopol running back James Patrick, as he finished with 123 yards on 15 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Bobcats defeated the Green Wave 26-13 Friday night in the Region 4-1A opener for both teams.

Despite the loss, Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said he was proud with the way the defense played in the second half as well as the effort the team displayed.

“I thought we played well in the second half. We had a couple of good drives, one in which we turned the ball over and the other one we scored,” Beesley said. “We held them scoreless in the second half. I think we came together as a team with the effort we had in the second half.”

If only Cathedral would have played with that same effort in the first half – especially on offense. The Green Wave scored on its second possession of the first quarter on a 28-yard pass from Caleb Upton to Daniel Huffines. Cole Mann’s extra point made it an 8-7 game with 5:29 to go in the quarter.

After that, it was all Sebastopol (3-2, 1-0) for the rest of the opening half. Patrick scored on a 13-yard run late in the opening quarter and then scored on runs of 4 yards and 1 yard in the second quarter. His fourth touchdown of the game was set up when Cathedral was trying to run out the clock, but a bad snap forced a sack at the Green Wave 2-yard-line and Bobcats took advantage to go up 27-6 at the half.

“We moved the ball on the second possession of the first half. We couldn’t move the ball after that. We couldn’t get the defense off the field,” Beesley said. “We had some opportunities. Playing conditions were not very good.”

Cathedral (0-4, 0-1) scored its other touchdown with 3:47 to go in the game when Dylan White connected with Huffines on a 13-yard pass.

The duo of Upton and White combined to go 6-of-11 passing for 108 yards, with White throwing one interception. Huffines had four catches for 101 yards. Elliott McCann had a big game defensively with seven solo tackles, two assists and one sack.
