NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School Rebels were in desperate need of a district win Friday night when they took the field against Amite School Center.

But head coach Richy Spears said they handed the win right to their opponents.

“Our thing is to make everybody earn everything they get, but if you give it to them, you can’t expect to win,” Spears said. “I felt like we just gave them this game. Give ASC credit though, they wanted it and they took it.”

Despite an early lead and an eventual late rally, ACCS wasn’t able to overcome a five run deficit, and fell 10-8.

ACCS found themselves in a hole early after giving up a run in the top of the first, but the Rebels were able to battle back and scratch across two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

Cole Gatlin knocked in the first run on an RBI double and Wade Simpson followed him up with an RBI single.

But the lead wouldn’t last long as ASC shifted momentum in the top of the second by scoring two runs.

Gatlin would even the score though in the second with his second RBI hit of the night.

But from there, ASC would take over. Multiple errors and runners left on base took its toll on ACCS as ASC built a 10-4 lead.

“You can’t make that many mistakes and win a baseball game,” Spears said. “All the base running and defensive errors, you just can’t do that.”

Despite being in a hole, ACCS wasn’t going down without a fight.

The Rebels plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within three at 10-7.

After a double by Marshall Edmonds, Torrey Smith knocked him in on a single and the Rebel spirits began to rise.

Smith would later score on an error and Gatlin scored the third run of the inning on a fielder’s choice.

After holding ASC scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Rebels had one last chance.

Kory Henson led off the inning with a single followed by Edmonds reaching on an error.

Tyler Stockstill knocked in Henson to bring the score to 10-8, and the Rebels were in business with just one out.

But one of the many mistakes that plagued the Rebels put the nail in the coffin.

After Cole Gatlin skied a ball to centerfield that fell to the ground, Edmonds took off for home. However, the freshman was thrown out at the plate.

“That is just a kid wanting to make a play for his team,” Spears said. “He is young, one of the ninth graders that starts, just young in that situation.”

ACCS’ next batter, Simpson struck out to end the game.

ACCS left 10 runners on base in the contest and racked up seven errors.

“That is a tough district loss,” Spears said. “We needed that one to stay in the playoff hunt.”
