FERRIDAY — Funeral Services for Harry Arch “Sonny” Turner, 76, of Ferriday, who died Thursday, March 12, 2015, will be Monday at noon at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday with the Rev. Truman Stagg officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service at the funeral home.

Mr. Turner was born in Ferriday on Dec. 28, 1938, the son of Harry Arch Turner, Jr. and Evelyn Wall Turner.

Sonny graduated from Ferriday High school.  He was a member of the Ferriday High football team that won State Champion for four years in a row and the last state championship team coached by the late Red Robertson.  After high school, he attended Kilgore Jr. College in Kilgore, Texas where he met his wife, who was a Kilgore Rangerette.

Sonny was an avid horseman who competed in Rodeos in the calf roping and cutting horse events. He trained quarter horses on the family farm, Rifle Point Plantation, and raced them statewide. He was a member of the LA Cattleman’s Association; a member of the Lum Brother’s Stockyard and also served on their board of directors. He assisted in the establishment of Huntington School and was also a member of Sevier Memorial Methodist Church.  He enjoyed coaching basketball and baseball for Huntington as well as coaching baseball for the Concordia Parish Summer Youth Program. He was a cattle rancher and farmer for 40 years before retiring. Sonny has been a deputy for the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Department for the last 15 years.  Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father and son.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Arch Turner, Jr.

Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane Rogers Turner; his mother, Evelyn Wall Turner of Ferriday; son, Blake Turner and wife, Elizabeth, of Natchez; daughter, Jill Rogers Turner of Rogers, Ark.; grandchildren, Brittany Funderburg Rogel and husband, Zach, Brooks Elizabeth Turner and Megan Jones King and husband, Richard; great-grandchildren, Camp Blunschi, and Kaylee King; sister, Charlaine Turner Yerger of Tallulah; brother, Charles “Bo” Edward Turner and wife, Melody, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, Nina Charlaine Yerger, Jason Arch Yerger, Jonathon “JT” Turner, and Rachel Turner.

Pallbearers will be Jason Arch Turner, Richard King, Cody Higdon, Tommy Denning, Don Haltom and Jonathon Turner.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Department, Randy Maxwell, Don Cavin, Don Marshall, Donnie Daye, Morris Wilson, Larry Richardson, and Tommy Braiser.
