NATCHEZ — The old IP Woodland Yard will play host to newly arrived fabricated pieces of a long awaited project.

The Bridge of Sighs — a pre-fabricated bridge that will span across Roth Hill Road — was delivered Wednesday, City Engineer David Gardner said.

The contractor for the project is Dozer Inc.

Gardner said he hopes to coordinate the moving of the bridge to Roth Hill with Magnolia Bluff Casino.

“It may cause some temporary lane closures,” Gardner said.

Gardner said the city is still working within its $700,000 budget for the project, which is slated to be finished at the start of July.

After the bridge is lifted in place, the city will build sidewalks to connect to the bridge for exterior lights, paint and begin electrical work.

The Community Alliance will provide landscaping around the bridge, Gardner said.

“It’s not just a city or county project, it’s a community project,” Gardner said. “We are going to make landscaping a reality.”

The project is being led by the Community Alliance as a part of the Natchez Trails Project.

“We have been working on this thing for years,” Gardner said. “This is something that will blend in perfect on the bluff, one of our most prestigious locations. It’s really gratifying to know that you have the funds for the project and you got a stamp of approval from the community.”

Gardner said once rainy conditions clear, they can finish poring concrete for the bridge columns. After the concrete cures, the contractor will set the bridge on the footings.

“I think once people see it they will get excited,” Gardner said. “I think it’s going to be an icon for the city and another reason for people to come to the Natchez Trails.”

The project is funded by grants from the Federal Highway Administration and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fishers and Parks.
