MAGNOLIA — Milton Griffin accounted for two touchdowns and nearly 200 all-purpose yards as the Franklin County Bulldogs ended their two-game losing streak with a 20-6 win over South Pike Friday night.
Griffin stared the game by returning the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown just 16 seconds into the game to give Franklin County a 6-0 lead.
However, neither team would score again until the second quarter. That’s when South Pike’s defense made a big play by forcing a fumble in which Willard Hampton returned 22 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 6-6 with 7:05 remaining.
But Billy Norman would give the Bulldogs the lead for good on a 3-yard run with 1:51 to go until halftime. Griffin then put the game away with his 50-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and James Green ran in for the 2-point conversion.
Griffin had seven carries for 83 yards and on defense he had an interception. Jeremy Hunt and Andy Morris each had eight tackles and Morris had one fumble recovery.
Franklin County (2-2) hosts Taylorsville next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Wilkinson County 34, Prentiss 7
PRENTISS — Wilkinson County quarterback Brian Montgomery had 230 yards of total offense and two touchdowns as the Wildcats defeated the Prentiss Bulldogs Friday night.
Montgomery completed 18 of 27 passes for 143 yards with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Graigland Freeman and one interception. He also was the team’s leading rusher as he had 12 carries for 87 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“We came out and played pretty aggressive in the first half,” Wilkinson County head coach Elbert Lyles said. “Brian played well. Defensive wise, we played well. We flew to the ball.”
Brandon Harton had 10 carries for 62 yards and one touchdown and Jazonta Ephion picked off a pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
But despite the impressive win, Lyles said his team needs to be more disciplined and focused.
“We had a whole lot of penalties. We’re going to watch film on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We’re going to try and come out and be a more focused team. We left several touchdowns on the field.”
Yet he did give credit to several players on defense who stepped up, including Stevenson Veals, James Maiden, Kenneth Jarvis and Ezra Jones. He also said the secondary, which he was concerned about going into the game, played better than even he expected.
Wilkinson County (2-1) plays at Port Gibson next Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
