WOODVILLE — Brandon Sanders and Christopher Perry combined for 288 yards rushing and four touchdowns and Adams County Christian needed every bit of them as the Rebels rallied to defeat Wilkinson County Christian 41-32 Friday night.

In the MAIS District 5-AA opener for both teams, Sanders had 21 carries for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Two of them were in the fourth quarter after ACCS went into the final 12 minutes trailing WCCA 32-29. Sanders ran in from 3 yards out with 10:40 to go and from 5 yards out with just 2:04 remaining.

Perry added 115 yards rushing on just six carries, including the game’s first score on a 66-yard run with 6:45 left in the first quarter.

Despite the win, ACCS head coach Paul Hayles was not pleased some of the things that kept the Rams in the game.

“It was one of the most frustrating nights I’ve ever had on the sidelines. We made so many mistakes. Every time we would take the lead, we would make a mistake which would open the door for (WCCA),” Hayles said.

The Rebels took a 13-0 lead after one quarter of play, but the Rams answered with 16 straight points. On 4th and 1 from the ACCS 28-yard line, Trenton Hall kept the ball and went into the end zone. Duncan Ashley added the two-point conversion run with 2:06 to go. Then with 1:10 remaining until halftime, Kaleb Sterling picked off a Johnny Smith pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. Tramel McKinsey ran in for two points and it looked like WCCA would take a 16-13 lead into the locker room.

But ACCS (4-0, 1-0) marched down the field 75 yards and Smith atoned for his pick-six by scoring on a 1-yard run with 8 second left. Rusty Blackwell added the 2-point conversion run and the Rebels would be the team with the halftime lead at 21-16.

Then with 7:20 left in the third quarter, Zack Day scored on a 59-yard run and Sanders added the 2-point conversion for a 29-16 lead.

Then the game got a little weird. A couple of 15-yard penalties allowed ACCS to kickoff from the WCCA 30-yard line. The Rebels tried an onside kick, but Josh Gayle picked up the ball and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown. Ashley’s 2-point conversion run made it a 29-24 ball game.

Then on the ensuing kickoff, the Rams’ Harley Wheler tackled the runner in the end zone for a safety. With 2:29 to go in the third quarter, Hall scored on a 2-yard run to give the Rams a 32-29 lead.

“WCCA played extremely hard till the end. We were fortunate,” Hayles said.

For the second straight game, Day had at least 20 solo tackles. After a 20-tackle performance against Amite School Center a week earlier, he had 22 solos to go with six assists. Daniel Guedon had 10 solos, two assists, 2 pass deflections and one interception.

McKensie was the leading rusher for WCCA (1-3, 0-1) with 95 yards on 22 carries.

ACCS hosts Prairie View Academy for homecoming next Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff while WCCA is off next week.
