JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The leader of the country’s largest civil rights organization is urging Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour to pardon two black women serving life sentences for their role in an $11 armed robbery.

NAACP President Ben Jealous says he couldn’t find another case anywhere in the country involving so stiff a sentence for ‘‘such a small crime.’’

Barbour’s spokesman, Dan Turner, says a meeting is scheduled Wednesday between attorneys for the Scotts and an attorney for the governor.

Jamie and Gladys Scott were each convicted of two counts of armed robbery and sentenced to two life sentences. According to court records, they were found guilty of luring two men down a road near Forest, where three young assailants used a shotgun to rob the men in December 1993.
