NATCHEZ — Fans that enter D’Evereux Stadium Friday night might want to wear protective headgear, because school records have been falling in abundance at Cathedral this season.

The Green Wave has played just three games, but have already shattered two long-standing school records.

Quarterback Caleb Upton’s 471 passing yards in Cathedral’s 48-34 victory over Loyd Star set a record for most passing yards in a game, and the Green Wave’s 76 points last week against Enterprise set a school record for most points in a game.

“We’re definitely off to a great start,” Cathedral coach Ron Rushing said.

This is a far cry from a team that scored 13 points or less in seven of its 11 games last season.

But Rushing said he isn’t all that surprised at the record-setting offensive output.

“I’m not real surprised that some of (our players) are performing well,” Rushing said. “But I am surprised at how much they’re doing it. We’ve got kids that are capable of making plays, but I didn’t know they’d all be doing it at the same time.”

And Rushing attributes that production to outstanding preseason practices the team had.

“It really goes back to two-a-days before the season,” Rushing said. “We had a great week and got a lot of stuff put in. That’s one reason we’re having a lot of success early.”

And the rest of the state is starting to take notice.

The Green Wave rose to No. 3 in the Associated Press Class 1A poll, just ahead of defending state champion Mount Olive.

“I think it’s good, and the kids are excited about it,” Rushing said. “Like everybody says, the only poll that matters is the last one, but it’s good getting the recognition and the kids are realizing that their hard work is paying off.”

But if Cathedral is to keep that lofty ranking, they are going to have to get some revenge on Friday against St. Frederick from Monroe, La.

The Warriors defeated the Green Wave 14-6 last season, but expect Friday’s game to be a little more high scoring.

St. Frederick is 0-2 on the season, having lost to Loyola College Prep 41-28 and Independence 49-0.

But Rushing said his team can’t just look at those final scores and expect to win.

“Independence is one of the top five teams in Louisiana in Class 3A,” Rushing said. “(St. Frederick) looks very well-coached. They do a lot of things offensively, and will go from running the veer to the spread. They’re real athletic defensively and have a lot of kids that can run.”

Cathedral’s great start to the season has got Green Wave fans thinking not just playoffs, but a home playoff game.

In order to host a playoff game, Cathedral must finish in the top two in its district, which is something the Green Wave haven’t done since 1997.

But that is yet another record the team is set on breaking this season.

“Last year our goal was to make the playoffs and this year it’s to host a playoff game,” Rushing said. “That is definitely something we talked about early in the year.”
