NATCHEZ — Despite a flurry of last-minute qualifications for some races, six Adams County officials enjoyed a quiet re-election by default with the close of qualifying Friday.

In a year in which every other seat on the board of supervisors is under contention, District 2 Supervisor David Carter — who qualified as an independent — had no challenger at the end of the day.

“There have been some good times, some bad times, and more than anything, I have learned a lot these last four years,” Carter said. “I look forward to staying dedicated to doing the best I can and moving the county forward.”

Court Judges Charlie Vess and Patricia Dunmore were likewise unchallenged, as were County Prosecutor Barrett Martin and Tax Collector Peter Burns.

Other races, however, will not prove as quiet.

The most crowded local race, for District 5 supervisor has six candidates, incumbent Calvin Butler, , Leroy Chatman, James H. Berry Jr., S.E. “Spanky” Felter, Brenda Robinson and Grady Wilson.

Four men are vying for Adams County sheriff, including Sheriff Charles “Chuck” Mayfield, Randy Freeman, Travis Lamont Patten and Elvis Prater.

Four candidates are likewise in the running for chancery clerk, which with the announced retirement of Clerk Tommy O’Beirne has no incumbent. County Administrator Joe Murray and attorney Brandi Lewis qualified early for the position, followed later by Natchez City Clerk Donnie Holloway. Bankruptcy attorney Jack Lazarus was the final candidate to qualify for the office.

Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker is facing two challengers, Lamar Bullen and Jennifer Johnson.

The primary election will be Aug. 4, with primary runoffs — if needed — following Aug. 25 and a general election Nov. 3 that will include statewide offices on the ballot.
