VIDALA — A Vidalia teen remains behind bars on a $50,000 bond after being charged with an attempted sex crime.

Deairus Brown, 17, 310 Ester St., was arrested Monday on a charge of attempted forcible rape. His bond was set after he was magistrated in Seventh Judicial District Court Wednesday morning.

Vidalia Police Investigator Renda Singleton declined to discuss specifics about the Feb. 12 incident on Pine Street that led to Brown’s arrest because the victim was a juvenile.

Singleton said, however, charges were pressed against Brown immediately and he apparently went into hiding.

He was arrested earlier this week after he returned home and his mother contacted the police, telling them to come arrest him, Singleton said.

“(Brown) was taken to the Vidalia Police Department, he was read his rights, booked and then taken to the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office for holding,” she said.

The matter is still under investigation, Singleton said.
