WOODVILLE — For the second time this season, Wilkinson County Christian Academy senior pitcher Bethany Fletcher had a big-game performance against Silliman Institute.

One month to the date after shutting out Silliman in a 3-0 win on the road, Fletcher had another strong outing by allowing two runs on five hits as the Lady Rams won their second straight MAIS District 5-AA championship by defeating the Lady Wildcats 4-2 Thursday night.

Even though both teams finished 6-2 in district play, the Lady Rams’ sweep of the Lady Wildcats was the difference. Both teams will participate in the MAIS Class AA South State Tournament, which will take place at Amite School Center in Liberty on Sept. 25 and 27.

Fletcher, one of seven seniors on WCCA’s team, went all seven innings. She struck out three and walked none. She ended up being the winning pitcher after the Lady Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning that turned a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 lead.

“It was a big win for our team. We won district. I was proud of my girls, especially my seniors,” WCCA head coach Ray McDaniel said. “Bethany’s a competitor. She battled all night long. I gave her the ball because I had complete confidence in her and she brought it home.”

Three other seniors also came through for the Lady Rams on this occasion. Taylor Littleton went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Her first RBI double was in the bottom of the first inning that tied the score a 1-1. Her second run-scoring double was in the bottom of the fourth. Sarah Hendry drove in a run with a double and Cameron Herrington added an RBI in the bottom of the fourth.

“I can’t say how happy I am for this group of seniors — Caroline Walker, Bethany Fletcher, Taylor Littleton, Sarah Hendry, Cameron Herrington, Julia Pace and Samantha Gentry. I’m going to miss them,” McDaniel said.

Silliman scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Fletcher kept the Lady Wildcats off the scoreboard until the top of the fourth.

WCCA (16-6 overall) hosts Amite School Center next Monday with the JV game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

Centreville’s game cancelled

CENTREVILLE — Thursday afternoon’s fast-pitch softball game between Centreville Academy and Columbia Academy at Columbia was cancelled.

Centreville head coach Mark Mann said the game was cancelled because Columbia Academy had to make up an MAIS District 4-AA game that was postponed earlier in the season.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play at Brookhaven Academy next Monday, but that will all hinge on the outcome of the Silliman-WCCA game. If Silliman wins, then Centreville and WCCA will each finish with 5-3 records in MAIS District 5-AA.

Which, as Mann pointed out, will result in the Lady Tigers and Lady Rams playing each other in a one-game playoff to determine the district’s No. 2 seed for the Class AA South State Playoffs.

However, if WCCA wins, then the Lady Rams will be the district champions and the Lady Wildcats will be the runner-up and No. 2 seed.

“We eagerly await the result of that game,” Mann said.
