Historical Society meeting today

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Historical Society’s monthly general meeting will be at 7 p.m. today at the Historic Natchez Foundation; 108 S. Commerce St. Seating is limited.
Mr. Jim Barnett will present a power point program titled “The Portage of the Cross: Forgotten French Colonial Landmark on the Lower Mississippi River.” Mr. Barnett, a member of the Natchez Historical Society is a retired director of the Historic Properties Division with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Mr. Barnett is the author of two books: The Natchez Indians: A History to 1735 and Mississippi’s American Indians. He has articles in the following publications: The Journal of Mississippi History, Mississippi Archaeology, and Southern Quarterly. Mr. Barnett lives in Natchez with his wife Sharon.
The Natchez Historic Society holds monthly meetings except in June, July and August. All programs, free and open to the public, are informative and educational with guest speakers on a variety of historical topics. A social gathering is held at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting following at 7 p.m. For more information, call 601-446-5742.
