NATCHEZ — While Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels and Trinity Episcopal Day School Lady Saints battled to keep their postseason hopes alive Saturday afternoon, fifth and sixth grade representatives from each school battled against one another in AYA action.

Glynn Adams Logging, representing ACCS, came into the game undefeated, but Trinity’s Dr. Falkenheiner team were far from intimidated.

With 50 seconds left, Trinity was down by four when Mackenzie Bertrand sunk what many believed to be a 3-point shot, however, the referee pointed out Bertrand’s foot on the line.

“It was pretty tough,” Bertrand said. “My right foot was on the line, so they said it counted for two (points).”

Down 12-10 with eight seconds to play, Drue Boyd came up with the steal for ACCS to secure the 12-10 victory. Boyd, who is the younger sister of McKenzie Boyd, Bailey Boyd and Skylar Adams, who were all playing for the Class AA South State title in Brookhaven on Saturday, said the decision to play over watching her sisters was an easy one.

“Oh I’d rather be playing,” said Boyd, laughing.

Leading the charge for ACCS, though, was Heidi Zimmerman, who viewed the game as a nice form of relief. Zimmerman’s house burned down the night before, and after such an emotional night, Zimmerman was elated to get the win on Saturday at Cathedral High School’s gym with her family able to watch. Now, she’s hoping to keep the team’s undefeated streak going when the team finishes the regular season Saturday at Trinity, playing against the Ready Decks.

“This was our closest game,” Zimmerman said. “The highest we’ve scored this season is 28-6.”

Zimmerman and Amber Scroggins each scored four points for ACCS, while Kayla Freeman and Boyd each added two points apiece.

Bertrand scored all but two of Trinity’s points. Meredith Lessley had the first two points of the game for Trinity in the loss.
