Centralized winds send limbs down

NATCHEZ — A 20-minute wind, rain and hail storm concentrated in neighborhoods near Liberty Road caused multiple trees and power lines to fall Monday afternoon, leaving many houses without electricity.

Trees and branches reportedly fell on Laurel, Peachtree and Auburn avenues, near the Roselawn subdivision, and other areas nearby.

Four wooden power line poles snapped in half on Old Pond Road, leaving power lines hanging in the street.

Windows in some other nearby buildings were blown out.

Linda Loftin’s house on Laurel Avenue was damaged by large limb from a pin oak tree in her back yard.

While Loftin was in the kitchen, she heard a noise at approximately 4:30 p.m. and soon realized a branch had fallen on the roof of her house.

The limb pierced through her bedroom closet ceiling, ruining her clothes, shoes and purses.

The branch left a 3-by-2-foot hole in the ceiling, allowing rain to fall in her closet and on the bedroom floor near the closet door.

A tip of the branch also poked through the wall of her guest bedroom, which is adjacent to her bedroom.

Loftin’s State Farm Insurance Agent Stuart Heflin stood her yard Monday evening, watching construction workers attempt to remove the fallen limb in sections — while trying to avoid causing more damage.

Heflin said he received numerous calls Monday from customers reporting damage from the storm, including some customers with hail damage to cars.

Peachtree Road resident Carolyn Kirk said she was on her patio watching the rain and hail when several big branches started to fall, littering her front lawn and back yard.

She said Entergy officials told her she would not have her electricity back until 4 a.m.

“I’m gonna miss the (Saints) game tonight,” Kirk said.

Kirk said she first heard the rain and hail, and she then noticed the trees were blowing sideways.

The storm was reportedly a brief, straight-wind storm.

Emergency Management officials were unable to be reached before press time.
