CENTREVILLE — When Bowling Green School rolls into Centreville Academy from Franklinton, La., Friday, it will run into a team in the same situation as itself.

Bowling Green is currently 1-4 on the season, while Centreville sits at 2-3. Both teams are in a rebuilding year, Tigers assistant coach Brian Stutzman said.

“They beat us 21-0 at their place last year, and we beat them two years ago in the playoffs. They also made the playoffs last year, but we didn’t face them,” Stutzman said.

“It’s a good rivalry, but it’s a different bunch of kids. We lost a lot of seniors, so hopefully these young guys understand the challenge we have.”

Stutzman said Bowling Green mostly liked to use a spread formation on offense, something the Tigers will have to be able to contain.

“They’ll go into double-slot sets from the shotgun, but they’ll also line up in the I (formation) and run over you,” he said.

Practices have still been focused on the fundamental aspects of the game, Stutzman said, and the coaches want their players to get that part of the game down before moving on to more advanced stuff.

“With this young bunch, we still haven’t been able to put in any extra stuff,” Stutzman said

“That’s not frustrating, because you kind of have to perfect your foundation before you add any fancy stuff to it, and that’s kind of where we are.”

And Stutzman said he feels like the team is close to where the coaches want it to be.

“These young kids just want to play. Nobody likes to practice, but they love Friday nights,” he said.

“They got a taste of victory these last two weeks, and it made their mouths water. We started out 0-3, and now we’ve won two in a row, so they’ve begun to buy in. We’ve had some leaders really step up for us.”

And as each game comes and goes, the Centreville players are looking to get more prepared for postseason play.

“We’ve seen some good stuff, and these guys are fun to coach,” Stutzman said.

Kickoff at Centreville is at 7 p.m. Friday.
