NATCHEZ — Quinton Logan’s baseball future won’t be a distraction when the Cathedral Green Wave attempt to get back to the state championship in 2015.

With less than two weeks away from Cathedral’s first practice game of the season, the senior left-handed pitcher signed to play for Hinds Community College, signaling the end of what’s been an exciting recruitment.

“Everybody I was talking to wanted me to play right off the bat, but Hinds was the best choice for me because I have a chance of getting drafted,” said Logan after signing at Cathedral High School Monday. “Playing junior college, I can go play for one year and get drafted the next year. At a four-year, you have to wait until you’re a junior. I really want to go to the big leagues.”

Cathedral baseball coach Craig Beesley said the hype surrounding Logan is unlike anything he’s seen, and though Cathedral has had great baseball players in the past, only Caleb Upton and Jeremy Davis can somewhat compare to the interest Logan’s received.

“He’s one of the most hyped athletes we’ve had in baseball,” Beesley said. “The buzz around Quinton right now, all over the United States, is pretty big. I get calls from all over, from (Division 1) scouts, to professional scouts, to (junior colleges).”

Logan will become the second Green Wave player under Beesley to go play for Hinds, as Caleb Upton signed to play for Hinds two years ago. Logan, who transferred from Trinity in 2014, recorded a 3-3 record with the Saints last season. Logan struck out 63 batters in 28 innings pitched and registered a 1.75 ERA. He was selected to be on the MAIS District 7-A All-District First Team.

With his college choice now in the rearview mirror, Logan is thankful to put the entire process behind him.

“It’s been nerve-racking, but it’s been exciting at the same time,” Logan said. “Like the Braves scout would call me every other day. It’s chilled out now, but it’s been fun.”

Looking ahead to Cathedral’s 2015 baseball season, which will feature most of the team members from last season’s team that played for a state championship in Jackson, Beesley is anxious to add Logan to the mix, where he believes he will thrive as the Green Wave’s ace.

“Quinton has a lot of talent and a lot of ability, and we hope that he shines this year,” Beesley said. “We’re looking for big things out of him.”
