Legislative luncheon to be hosted

VIDALIA— Concordia residents will have the opportunity Tuesday to share lunch and questions with state legislatures.
The Concordia Chamber will host its annual legislative luncheon at noon on Tuesday at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center to give state legislatures the opportunity to shed light on local and state concerns.
Legislatores who will be attending include Sen. Francis Thompson with Louisiana District 34, Sen. Neil Riser with Louisiana District 32 and Rep. Andy Anders with Louisiana District 21.
Those who attend the luncheon will be able to ask questions regarding legislatives issues that are approaching, Concordia Chamber Executive Director Jamie Wiley said.
Among the suspected topics for discussion, Wiley thinks crude oil prices will be one of the most talked about issues among those in attendance.
“The crude oil prices are real low and a lot of people are getting laid off,” Wiley said. “It benefits most people because they are getting cheaper gas prices, but it’s affecting many businesses.”
Global oil prices have fallen over the past several months. Although consumers of gas are likely to pay less, many oil businesses are suffering.
This is an opportunity for businesses and individuals to not only hear what type of bills senators or legislatures have coming up, but to discuss the hot topic of the reduction of oil prices, Concordia Chamber Vice President Fred Middleton said.
“The state depends on oil, and when you have the price of oil decrease, it will have an impact on the state’s budget,” Middleton said.
Because of the drop in crude oil prices, both heath care and education funds could be affected, Middleton said.
“When the state plans their budget and the price of oil is half of what it should be, that means somebody may get cut,” Middleton said.
The luncheon will be $10 at the door, but Wiley said those who plan to attend must RSVP by calling the chamber at 318-336-8223.
