ROCKIN’ REBELS: ACCS boys, girls capture district tournament titles; prepare for state

NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School head coach Melanie Hall and her team waited for more than a year to get to this point.
District champions, an undefeated mark in district play, and now, the true test begins as the Lady Rebels aim for a state championship.
“I’m just proud of my girls,” Hall said. “They’ve been working hard since the end of last season. I’m just so proud of them, and to God be the glory.”
The Lady Rebels took down Brookhaven Academy Saturday in the championship game of the district tournament, 47-22.
Jordan Petty and Mackenzie Boyd led the team with 10 points apiece.
Along with Petty, Bailey Boyd, Skylar Adams and Anna McDaniel were named to the All-Tournament team, and Petty was also named the tournament MVP.
Hall is on the fence about whether or not her team is where they need to be just yet, but she is optimistic about their potential to make a run in the state tournament.
“We are prepared,” she said. “They are ready and nobody can throw something at us we aren’t prepared for. We are just going to have to play smart for four quarters. We can’t have turnovers, and we have to make good decisions. The girls are going to do whatever it takes.”
As for if the Lady Rebels can win it all, Hall simply stated, “On any given night, anything can happen. A little bit of talent and a lot of heart can go a long way.”
ACCS currently sits at 24-6 overall and finishes district with a 10-0 mark.
The girls weren’t the only ones celebrating Saturday, though. The boys also captured a district tournament championship with a convincing 56-32 win against Brookhaven Academy.
The win brings ACCS to 23-3 overall and they also ran the table in district play, finishing 10-0.
“It feels good,” ACCS head coach Richy Spears said. “But our goal is definitely more. I told them we still have some business to take care of and that this was just the first step.”
Brandon Brooks led the Rebels in scoring with 15 points in the championship game, while Jay Fleming, Tyler Stockstill and Lester Wells each added eight points of their own.
“In the first quarter we played well, but then kind of took a deep breath and laid back and let them make a run,” Spears said. “Then we came out in the third and held them to just two points. We just can’t have those letdowns.”
Spears said there are always things he wants his team to improve upon and that for them to continue to be successful, they will have to continue to play their style of basketball.
“Teams are going to try and slow us down,” Spears said. “As long as we keep pressure and intensity and do what we do, it is going to be hard for them to score.”
Spears knows the potential his team has, but said he wasn’t going to crown them the best in the state yet.
“We ain’t going there,” he said on if his team could win it all. “I’m not making that statement. I just know we have a chance to be a pretty good basketball team if we play the way I know we are capable of playing.”
