NATCHEZ — After a close call against Salem Monday night, the Cathedral Lady Wave stepped on the court Tuesday and took their game up a notch, beating Piney Woods 67-17.

“Everybody we played played outstanding defense,” Cathedral head coach Randy Smith said. “We played a man press and eventually dropped back into half-court man on defense.”

A host of Cathedral players got into the scoring column, led by McKenzie Milligan with 15 points and Elizabeth Smith with 12 points.

“Everybody contributed and did a fine job,” Smith said. “McKenzie Milligan continues to play really strong. We are getting healthy, and hopefully, will give Bogue Chitto a run on Friday.”

With the win, Cathedral improved to 11-6 overall and is now 5-3 in district play with a big matchup against Bogue Chitto set for Friday looming.

“If we can beat their press and be patient on offense, we have a great chance,” said Smith of taking down Bogue Chitto.

Natchez High 50, Oak Grove 38

HATTIESBURG — Rashonae Rice scored 14 points and Skylar Morgan chipped in with 12, as Natchez High ran its record to 16-1 and 5-0 in district with a 50-38 win against Oak Grove.

“The girls looked good,” Natchez High coach Alphaka Moore said. “We’ve been working on our defense, and it really showed for us tonight.”

Natchez led by just six at halftime, but a 24-6 third quarter propelled the Lady Bulldogs to another win.

“Offensively, we moved the ball well and communicated,” Moore said. “Rashonae Rice stepped up major on the boards, Kirdis (Clark), Ernesha (Chatman) and Skylar (Morgan) all played big roles (Tuesday).”

Moore said she left her starters in longer Tuesday night to prepare them for the tough tests ahead and to also get a good look at who could be a key player off the bench.

Trinity Episcopal 67, WCCA 31

NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints continued their undefeated run in district play Tuesday with a 67-31 win against WCCA.

“We started off in our press, and that is one of the things we are really working on with south state coming up,” Trinity head coach Fay Minor said. “We need to get our people ready for it.”

With the win, Trinity improved to 16-5 overall and sits atop their district at 7-0.

“We are really feeling great about that,” Minor said. “Each game, we are getting better and better.”

D’Asia Mitchell paced the Lady Saints offense with 21 points and Jasmine Ivory added 13.

Trinity was in control the whole way, leading by 11 points after the first quarter and taking a 20-point lead into halftime.

The Lady Saints went on to hold WCCA to just 11 second half points and cruised to a victory.

Avoyelles 55, Vidalia 43

VIDALIA — Trailing by just one entering the fourth quarter, the Vidalia Lady Vikings were in position to make a run at their first win in weeks.

But Avoyelles proved to be too much, outscoring Vidalia 23-14 in the fourth quarter, and winning the game 55-43.

“We just had a few mental breakdowns on defense, and they went ahead of us,” Vidalia head coach Fred Marsalis said. “We just gave up some points that we shouldn’t have.”

Avoyelles’ Tykalon Jacobs and Deaisha Johnson each scored 17, leading the Lady Mustangs, while Tierra Bell led Vidalia with 11.

One thing Marsalis was pleased with was the number of Lady Vikings in the scoring column. Eight different Vidalia players recorded points in the contest.

“That is what we’ve been looking for all year,” Marsalis said. “We even had some kids come off the bench and score. That is what we wanted to do, spread it around.”

Winnfield 53, Ferriday 36

WINNFIELD — Without top scorers Jada Griggs and Kesia Mason for the rest of the season, the Ferriday Lady Trojans needed to find a way to produce offensively.

They weren’t able to do that Tuesday, as they fell on the road to Winnfield 53-36.

“I’m playing a lot of freshmen and inexperienced players,” Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron said.

Zhane Green and Shaniqua Hillard tried to pick up the slack, scoring 12 and eight points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough for Ferriday.

“They are doing an awesome job,” said Abron of the two. “I can’t ask anything else out of them. All of them gave 100 percent effort.”

Ferriday fell to 17-7 and 3-5 in district play with the loss, and Abron is hoping her players will keep their heads up as the season comes to a close.

“I just want them to not give up and play team ball like we’ve been doing,” she said, “We need some others to step up.”

Jefferson County 42, Crystal Springs 19

CRYSTAL SPRINGS — The Jefferson County Lady Tigers continued to roll through district play, picking up their sixth win, in a 42-19 route of Crystal Springs.

Diamond Smith led the way with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Kailyn Hammett also turned in a solid performance with 14 points and seven assists.

But Jefferson County head coach Flora McKnight wasn’t completely pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“We just missed a lot of easy shots,” she said. “We couldn’t put things together because we didn’t play great defense. But, it was good to get a win.”

McKnight said her team is gaining confidence as they continue their district winning streak, but she is hoping they show more of it in their remaining games.
