NATCHEZ — Trey Hand has been kicking a soccer ball since he was four years old, but the Cathedral senior isn’t limited to that only.

A National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Peer Ministry, Science Olympiad, math and science tournament team and science quest member, Hand is working out his brain just as much as his legs on the soccer pitch.

“Trey has been on the team as long as I’ve been here,” Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said. “He is a good kid, easy to coach, and he is pretty studious. He focuses, listens and makes a good effort to do what I ask of him. He does things the proper way.”

Hand plays as a defenseman for the Green Wave and is one of the steadiest players on the team.

“I like the fact you only have one objective and that is to protect the goal,” Hand said. “On offense, there are some other facets like crossing and all that junk, but on defense, all you have to do is keep the ball out.”

Hand isn’t only juggling a soccer ball,though. He is also juggling a heavy workload of school.

“You just have to put in the right amount of work,” he said. “There is soccer time, and then there is school time.”

Hand is currently 10th in his class with a 4.3 GPA, and with college right around the corner, he has begun taking looks around.

“I’ve looked at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and I’m touring Alabama,” he said. “Ole Miss is also in there.”

Hand said he hopes to study biomedical engineering while in college, but for now, he wants to wrap up his senior year on a high note.

“Mainly, I want to keep my GPA up and come out on top when it comes down to math and science tournaments,” he said. “We have a history doing well in those.”

Hogue hopes Hand will also continue to be a leader for the soccer team.

“When Trey is at practice, he is a leader,” Hogue said. “When Trey comes in, he gets things going. These young kids will start goofing around, and when Trey shows up, it is time to go to work.”
