The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society and Historic Jefferson College are teaming up to host a 5k run by utilizing the historic college’s nature trails and other property — which will not be a walk in your typical park.

“(Participants) can expect to get their behinds kicked,” said co-organizer Deanne Tanksley. “It’s a tough trail, but it’s really fun.”

Tanksley said the steep trail makes for a fun run, while also allowing runners to take in the beauty that the trail offers.

“You may see deer and all sorts of wildlife out there,” Tanksley said. “But you shouldn’t have to worry about snakes or mosquitoes since it’s January.”

The course, Tanksley said, takes about an hour to walk and will include many streams with bridges and a beautiful pond.

The 5k run will start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. at the college and is $20. All participants will get a T-shirt.

Refreshments will follow the race, which is open to both walkers and runners.

All proceeds will go on to help fund the humane society’s new animal shelter.

The college is located on U.S. 61 North in Washington on 16 Old North St.
