JACKSON — Tyler Stockstill and Jay Fleming stepped up in a big way for Adams County Christian School Saturday afternoon as they led the Rebels with 11 points each in a 53-44 come-from-behind win over the Starkville Academy Volunteers at the Jackson Prep Holiday Classic 2015.

With Starkville Academy doing a good job defensively on ACCS’s Brandon Brooks, other players needed to take over for the Rebels after they got down 16-12 at the end of the first quarter. Those players were Stockstill and Jay Fleming.

“We were able to find them, whether it was going to the goal or pulling up for jumpers,” Rebels head coach Richy Spears said. “We had a tough game Friday. We got off to a slow start, just like the last game (against Jackson Academy). Then we were able to pick it up after halftime.”

ACCS actually started its comeback in the second quarter when it outscored Starkville Academy 17-11 to go into halftime leading the MAIS Class AAA Volunteers 29-27. The Rebels ramped up the pressure in the third quarter and that forced the Volunteers to get completely out of rhythm. The result was a 17-4 advantage for ACCS and a 46-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“The third quarter, we stepped up on defense. We were able to get some good shots on the other end. We took advantage of what they gave us,” Spears said.

Trey Fleming finished with 10 points while both Brooks and Devin Spear tallied seven points each for the Rebels.

ACCS (11-2) returns to MAIS District 5-AA action Tuesday night when it plays at Central Hinds Academy.

ACCS girls 48, Starkville Academy 30

JACKSON — Jordan Petty had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels to a 48-30 win over the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers Saturday morning at the Jackson Prep Holiday Classic 2015.

“She’s tough as nails,” Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said. “There was one particular play that she refused to let anybody have the ball. She grabbed the rebound and converted it.”

Mackenzie Boyd led ACCS with a game-high 12 points and Bailey Boyd added 11 points. But despite the win over an MAIS Class AAA team, there was one thing that Hall was not too thrilled with.

“We showed some toughness, but we had way too many turnovers,” Hall said. “We’ve got to continue to work better and cut down on the turnovers once the postseason begins.”

The Lady Rebels (15-3) visit District 5-AA opponent Central Hinds Academy Tuesday night.

Trinity Episcopal girls 59, Brookhaven Academy 45

BROOKHAVEN — D’Asia Mitchell had a game-high 18 points and Jasmine Ivory had 11 points as the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints got a much-needed win before MAIS District 7-A play begins this week as they defeated the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars 59-45 Saturday afternoon.

“We played great team ball. One of the best games they’ve played all year,” Lady Saints head coach Fay Minor said. “They passed the ball real well. It was a big, big win.”

Trinity Episcopal broke open a close game in the second quarter thanks to some solid defense. The Lady Saints ended up outscoring the Lady Cougars 17-7 in that quarter for a 33-19 halftime lead.

The Lady Saints (8-5) play host to Tensas Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday in their district opener.

Brookhaven Academy boys 52, Trinity Episcopal 32

BROOKHAVEN — Brookhaven Academy’s Peyton Hood almost scored as many points by himself as Trinity Episcopal ended up with as a team as he led all scorers with 27 points in leading the Cougars to a 52-32 win over the Saints Saturday afternoon.

Trinity Episcopal was led by Demond Fleming with nine pints and Jacarius Caston with seven points.

The Saints (3-5) take on Tensas Academy in their MAIS District 7-A opener at home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Franklin County girls 58, Prentiss 48

FAYETTE — Tadayla Hunt led Franklin County High School with 13 points while Jada Hunt had 12 points and Jaylin Autmann added 11 points as the Lady Bulldogs from Meadville rallied to defeat the Prentiss High School Lady Bulldogs 58-48 Saturday afternoon to begin Day 2 of the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Trailing 30-22 at halftime, Franklin County started its rally in the third quarter when it put up 17 points while holding Prentiss to just 10 points to make the score 40-39. Then came the fourth quarter, when Franklin County dominated on both ends of the court and outscored Prentiss 19-8.

Prentiss boys 50, Franklin County 40

FAYETTE — Chauncey Baggett and Donta Ford led the Prentiss High School Bulldogs with 11 points each as they defeated the Franklin County High School Bulldogs 50-40 Saturday afternoon at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Franklin County got off to a slow start, trailed Prentiss 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, and never recovered. Prentiss went into halftime with a 21-16 lead and continued to add to its lead in the second half.

Kel Covington led Franklin County with nine points and Vincent Briggs had eight points.

Franklin County (10-3) next plays Friday night when it hosts Bogue Chitto.

Jim Hill girls 48, Jefferson County 31

FAYETTE — Ieisha Lacey led all scorers with 19 points while Debraia Bell and Shakebrand Younger had 10 points each as the Jim Hill High School Lady Tigers defeated the Jefferson County High School Lady Tigers 48-31 Saturday night at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Antrell Gales led Jefferson County with 13 points and Diamond Smith chipped in with 11 points.
