WCCA to travel to Centreville

CENTREVILLE — If Wilkinson County Christian is going to beat Centreville Academy, the Rams are going to have to play a perfect game.
That’s what WCCA (2-4, 0-1) head coach Billy Caston said was going to be the key to Friday night’s MAIS District 5-AA matchup. And even if the Rams have a perfect game, they’re also going to need to get one or two breaks, Caston said.
“We’re going to have to capitalize on those breaks if we get them,” Caston said.
“Last week against Tallulah (Academy), we created three turnovers in the red zone, and didn’t get any points out of that. We can’t have mistakes like that. If our defense creates turnovers, we have to score points.”
For Centreville (3-4, 1-0), the key will be keeping the Rams’ Wing T offense in check, and Tigers assistant coach Brian Stutzman said his team was familiar with that scheme.
“It’s similar to our double wing offense, and WCCA believes in it and they’re good at it. They have a big running back, Tramel McKinsey, and he breaks a lot of runs,” Stutzman said.
“They’re going to try and pound it, eat the clock and hope for a big play, either a counter or cross sweep.”
The Tigers are coming off a close loss to Brookhaven Academy, which is ranked No. 1 in AA. Stutzman said missed opportunities are what caused Centreville to come up just short in that game.
“We looked at the film (Monday), and we stopped ourselves with penalties, fumbles and things like that,” he said.
“A lot of it is the youth and pressure of situations that we were in, but I don’t see how they can’t leave out of with confidence. We hope that that keeps growing and lets them know they can play with anyone. The effort was tremendous.”
At this point in the season, Stutzman said the Tigers offense was in need of the most improvement.
“Our defense is way ahead of our offense, and we have to pick it up on the offensive side of the ball,” he said.
“We don’t have that big 150-yard rusher, we just have several good athletes that share the load and pick and choose with some play action pass.”
But despite Centreville’s supposed need for improvement on offense, Caston said stopping it would be quite a challenge for the Rams.
“They’re a talented team at a lot of different positions. They run well and throw better than teams at Centreville are known for,” Caston said.
“They’re attack is balanced, and we have to stop both the run and the pass. Most teams we’ve played so far have been one-dimensional, so this is going to be a challenge.”
With it being a rivalry game, Caston said he expects his kids to be eager to get on the field.
“I think they’ll be ready for Centreville. Our kids will be jacked, and I’m sure theirs will too,” Caston said.
Kickoff at Centreville is at 7 p.m. Friday.
