MANGHAM — No Jada Griggs, no problem. Because Griggs suffered an ankle sprain in Wednesday’s game in Mangham’s tournament, Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron gave Griggs the previous two nights off to let her heal up.

Without her, in a matchup against Mangham Friday night, the Lady Trojans got an offensive spark by Kesia Mason and Lakeshanna Harris, who both scored 19 in Ferriday’s 60-28 victory against Mangham.

“I told the team that they can prove that we can still win without (Griggs),” said Abron of her injured point guard who came into the game averaging 20-plus points per contest. “The girls have stepped up, and gotten into the right mindset.”

Abron wanted to see her team start fast against a Mangham team that hadn’t had a lot of practice because of the football team playing for a state championship. Her team responded with a 20-6 first quarter run, followed by the Trojans outscoring Mangham 24-9 in the second period.

“We needed to set the tone early, and that’s what they did,” Abron said.

Anasia Turner scored 10 in the ballgame for the Trojans, as well.

With the victory, Ferriday improves to 9-2 on the season.

University Academy 74, Trinity 52

ALEXANDRIA — University Academy took it to a traveling Trinity girls squad, beating the Lady Saints 74-52.

Trinity kept it close early, falling behind 15-11 in the first quarter. D’Asia Mitchell led the team in scoring with 24 points in the game, but the well-rounded offense of University Academy created 29 points in the second quarter, creating enough space for the Lions to cruise in the second half.

Jasmine Ivory scored 14 points, while Dionna Jackson had six.

With the loss, the Lady Saints fall to 6-4 on the season.
