NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School boys’ defense was far too fierce for Bowling Green to manage in a 65-31 Rebel victory.
With ACCS’ pressure defense creating turnovers, head coach Richy Spears was pleased to watch his team race toward a 16-2 lead in the first quarter.
“We went for the ball,” Spears said. “We made them turn it over, and got some run outs. I felt like we executed better than we usually do.”
While Tyler Stockstill scored a season-best 20 points, Brandon Brooks was dominant on the other end, swatting away Bowling Green field goal attempts. Brooks finished with 12 points on the offensive end.
Because ACCS took a commanding 39-18 lead into halftime, Spears had the opportunity to play multiple players.
“We got to have a lot of ball touching,” Spears said. “I don’t care who scores, as long as we’re playing as a team, and that’s what we did tonight.”
Lester Wells and Brodie Cole provided nine points in the victory.
With the win, the boys improved to 8-1 on the season.
Meanwhile, turnovers ultimately led to the ACCS girls’ downfall against the 2013-14 MAIS AA runner-ups Bowling Green.
Bowling Green raced out to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter, and took a 34-18 lead into halftime. After outscoring the Lady Rebels in the third and fourth quarter, Bowling Green finished ACCS off with a 65-38 victory at home.
ACCS head coach Melanie Hall said the team’s 26 turnovers cost them a chance to win, but despite the box score, her players never quite hustling.
“I love playing against this type of competition,” Hall said. “We haven’t faced that level until tonight, and that’s how you get better. This was a great experience for us.”
ACCS’ young squad, led by sophomore Bailey Boyd, received a great learning experience against a championship-contending team.
“You can only talk and show so much,” Hall said. “Them being out there and actually getting that experience to understand what you’re trying to teach them is the big thing.”
Jordan Petty led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Skyler Adams produced double-figure scoring totals with 10, as well.
The loss makes the ACCS girls 12-2 on the season.
