NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society its looking to fill the stockings of its animals this Christmas.

With a short Christmas list, NACHS board member Susan Callon said donations of dog and cat food have been recently low, but area contributions could change that.

“We are also taking in cleaning supplies, old sheets, kitty litter and blankets for our animals,” Callon said.

But like children, Callon said dogs and cats need entertainment also.

“The animals in the cages get bored, so we can take toys, too,” Callon said.

However, those who really wish to help the shelter can do so by having their animals spayed or neutered.

“We wish that everyone would get their pets spayed or neutered,” Callon said. “If everyone can take part in this, we would not have all the unwanted pets at our door.”

As Christmas approaches, the shelter has received the biggest gift of all, a new place to call home.

The new, pre-fabricated NACHS shelter building arrived at its future location on Liberty Road earlier this month, and board members could not be happier.

But the humane society’s new shelter cost the organization nearly $1.38 million. Of that, $500,000 is still needed.

“We just take it a little bit at a time,” Callon said. “I can’t say enough about all of the Natchez people in the area. They have been very helpful.”

Humane society President Kathy Fitch said the organization is looking into better ways for individuals to make donations.

“Monetary donations of any amount are very appreciated,” Fitch said. “Those who wish can sign up to have a bank draft donation. With this, you can donate any amount you choose monthly.”

The monthly pledge form can be found on the organization’s website, natchezpetadoptions.org.

Many donations will help with expenses such as transporting animals and maintaining the facility.

“The majority of our operation funds comes from donation,” Fitch said.

Recently, the shelter hosted its Christmas fundraiser party last Saturday at the home of Morgan and Jessica Ryan, and Fitch said it was a success.

“I thought it was great,” Fitch said. “The house was beautiful and the food was wonderful. We appreciate everybody for coming out and supporting the shelter.”
