NATCHEZ — The trial for a man indicted on 40 counts of child pornography has been rescheduled for January.

Alfred Roy Smith, 44, 7 Longmire Road, was indicted by a grand jury in August for charges relating to his July 2009 arrest.

Smith appeared in circuit court Thursday in front of Judge Forest “Al” Johnson. Johnson said in court he was recusing himself from the case because of his involvement in the case’s pretrial proceedings. The case was transferred to Judge Lillie Blackmon Sanders.

The trial was originally set for Nov. 19.

Brandon Ogburn from the Mississippi Attorney General’s office will be prosecuting the case, Assistant District Walt Brown said.

Attorney Anthony Heidelberg will be representing Smith.

Smith faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections for each count, according to a 2009 press release from the attorney general’s office.

The arrest was made by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit and the Public Integrity Division of the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Division with assistance from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Secret Service, the press release said.

“Our office was able to work with these two agencies and uncover multiple images of child pornography in the defendant’s home,” Attorney General Jim Hood said.
