FERRIDAY — Ferriday jumped on the board early Friday night, scoring 26 points in the first 14 minutes of the game that had district implications.
The Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers couldn’t come back, losing 32-0.
Already ahead, the Trojans elected to run the clock out in the second half after scoring in the third quarter.
De’Vante Scott and the rest of the Trojan running backs racked up 284 yards and three touchdowns behind their efficient offensive line.
“Our offensive line is getting more confident as the weeks pass,” coach Chad Harkins said.
Scott had 12 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Scott’s first touchdown came 3 minutes into the game from 7 yards out and his second touchdown came on a 24-yard run two minutes into the second quarter.
“He’s a play-maker. When he’s in the game everything clicks. When he’s not in the game we don’t click as well,” Harkins said.
Scott, who plays defense as well, recovered a fumble on Hodge’s first possession of the game, returning it for 40 yards for a touchdown. The heads-up play brought Ferriday to a 12-0 lead just four and half minutes into the game.
Ferriday’s other first quarter score came on a pass from ZuRaine Thompson to wide receiver Alfred Brown for 7 yards late in the first quarter.
Jarvis Brooks contributed 72 yards to the ground attack on 7 carries while Marques Lewis ran the ball 14 times for 76 yards and a score. Lewis’ touchdown run came in the third quarter with five minutes left on the clock.
Ferriday’s defensive line played phenomenal. They penetrated the Tigers’ offensive line, holding their primary back to just 44 yards on 17 carries while giving up just 37 total rushing yards.
“We knew they were going to run the lead. We practiced all week and our linebackers were prepared,” Harkins said.
Al Watson sacked the Tigers’ quarterback in the second quarter for an eight-yard loss and Gary Mayes intercepted him for a 30-yard return.
The Trojans established another drive late in the third quarter, pushing deep into Tigers’ territory. However, the Trojans turned the ball over on downs after Jarvis Brooks ran for a 14-yard score, which was called back on a holding penalty.
As the third quarter closed, Ferriday held a 32-0 lead that would stand. Both teams then ran the clock out, sealing the victory for Ferriday and pushing their record to 4-3, 2-0 in District.
