NATCHEZ — A candidate for the position of Adams County Sheriff ended up behind bars this weekend.

Sheriff’s deputies on Saturday arrested Roosevelt Owens Jr., 57, 1034 Martin Luther King St., on a DUI charge. Owens has since been released on $1,500 bond.

Calls to Owens’ residence were not returned Tuesday.

Owens, a former Natchez police officer, is one of eight candidates vying for the sheriff’s seat left open by former sheriff Ronny Brown, who died in March.

Brown’s wife, Angie, serves as interim sheriff, but she decided in May to withdraw her name from the race.

The special election for sheriff is Nov. 3. A run-off election will take place Nov. 24 if no one candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote.

The specially-elected sheriff will serve the remaining two years of this term, after which a general election will take place.
