Delta Charter’s junior varsity boys weathered an early “storm” generated by a visiting Georgetown, but ultimately, the team rallied in the second half to win 59-52 Thursday.

Georgetown took a 32-28 lead into the second half, having success against Delta Charter’s zone and making 73 percent of attempted field goals in the first half. Delta Charter head coach Dewayne Taylor opted to go to a man-on-man defense in the second half, which generated turnovers.

“We came out a little too relaxed,” Taylor said.

“Of course, it doesn’t help when the team you’re playing is making shots like they were.”

After the Storm’s defense created those second half turnovers, Delta Charter’s Dawson Woodruff led the charge in the third quarter, scoring 10 of his 13 points in the quarter.

“He kept us in the game,” Taylor said. “He started making shots and following his shots, making floaters off of rebounds.”

The Storm’s leading scorer Johnny Woodruff totaled 10 of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter, propelling Delta Charter to outscore Georgetown 20-14 in the final period. Georgetown’s Caleb Lasyone scored a game-high 23 points.

Following his team’s comeback, Taylor received compliments from the opposing Georgetown coaching staff.

“They were surprised we only went up to 10th grade,” Taylor said. “I think this shows a lot of character. A lot of young teams will give up after getting down on themselves. But we didn’t tonight.”

Delta Charter’s junior varsity team is now 3-0 on the season.
