VIDALIA — The Concordia Parish School Board voted Thursday to adjust national board certified staff and selected coaching supplements in the Parish.

National Board Certification is a program to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers.

The board gathered for its regular monthly meeting and addressed the supplements for an educational diagnostician teacher, or a learning disability teacher. The adjustment resulted in a $3,000 supplement, which will be put in place immediately.

Teachers, counselors, school psychologist and learning disability teachers have this certificate.

“They have these certificates because they have gone above and beyond to add additional certifications,” said Superintendent Paul Nelson. “I felt it was only fair that if this employee had the same type of certificate, then the employee should receive the same compensation.”

The board also approved to adjust the supplements for Monterey High School basketball coaches, which resulted in an $800 supplement per coach.

Because the length of basketball season at a school without a football program, such as Monterey, is five weeks longer than a scheduled football season at schools with programs, Nelson said this adjustment will bring the salary in line with football coaches.

The board went into executive session to discuss a personal issue during the meeting.

Nelson presented the Sidney A. Murray Jr. Citizenship Award to the following students:

• Sixth grader Omar La’Kemmione Pinkney, seventh grader Shanja Marie Plains and eighth grader Branton Latron Turner Jr. of Ferriday Junior High School.

• Sixth grader Aidan Brownell, Seventh grader Timothy Smith and eighth grader Dominik Harveston of Vidalia Junior High School.

• Sixth grader Ally B. Crofford and seventh grader Elizabeth C. Barton of Concordia Parish Academy of Math, Science and Technology.

• Sixth grader Coby Tarver, seventh grader Harlie Murray and eighth grader Madison Passman of Monterey  School.
