Centreville trying to regroup against Brookhaven

CENTREVILLE — Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman was not pleased with his team’s effort last Friday in its 21-0 loss against Bowling Green.
“We didn’t show up,” Stutzman said. “We just played with no emotion. We came out flat, they were fired up, and they took it to us.”
Stutzman said both sides of the ball performed poorly last Friday.
“On offense, we didn’t block or hold onto the football,” Stutzman said. “Defensively, I think we gave up 300-something yards. We probably had only about 90 yards on offense ourselves.”
Stutzman also complimented the effort of the Bowling Green players.
“They’re good on both sides of the ball,” Stutzman said. “They’re hungry. They want to win (a state championship), and it shows. Their coaching staff does a great job with them, and we wish our kids could be as hungry as they are.”
The Tigers will face an opponent that’s similar to Bowling Green Friday, Stutzman said, as they are set to host Brookhaven.
“They’re similar teams,” Stutzman said. “They both have good squads and are in the same district. They’re 6-0 and have one of the best quarterbacks in the private school association.
“He’s a good runner and passer, and we’re going to have to stop him. They’ve got some good receivers too. They’re not 6-0 for any other reason, other than they’re good. They’ll put a lot of pressure on us defensively, and it’s going to be a challenge.”
Stutzman said he and the rest of the coaching staff are trying their best to make sure the players get up every week for their game.
“It all falls back on leadership,” Stutzman said. “I get sick of saying that, but we have to step up. We have to coach better and they have to play better.
“They’re going to have to respond better. If there’s a negative play, they can’t let themselves get down. If it’s a positive play, they can’t let themselves lay down.”
Offensive consistency and making sure everybody makes their blocking assignments will be two critical factors in the game Friday.
“We need more consistency on offense, as far as limiting turnovers go,” Stutzman said. “I think we had either six or seven last week.
“We also need to make sure everybody’s blocking, not just the (offensive) line. The running backs need to block too, I’d hate to zero in on just the line, because it’s the whole team.”
Centreville (4-2) will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.
