WOODVILLE (AP) — Though law enforcement officials refuse to discuss it, a published report provided new details about the death of a Lincoln County woman this week.
The Woodville Republican, quoting Wilkinson County Coroner Travis Sharp, said a woman’s severed head was found at an oil well site near Crooked Creek Road on Monday.
Meanwhile, the headless body of a woman was found Monday at another oil well site in Amite County, this one near Dr. Anderson Road. The two sites are about 30 miles apart.
Family members of Brittany Gill, 26, identified her body from tattoos and fingerprints. Her boyfriend, Justin Whittington, 31, of Liberty, has been charged with tampering with evidence and desecration of a corpse. He remains held without bond in the Amite County Jail following a preliminary court hearing on Wednesday.
The Amite County Sheriff’s Department has not provided new details about the case, including a description of the condition of Gill’s body.
Amite County Coroner Cam Sharp said this morning that he would not confirm or deny reports of Gill’s body being found in two places.
He described the case as an “open-death investigation,” which means authorities haven’t ruled it accidental or as the result of foul play.
In an earlier interview, Amite County Sheriff Tim Wroten said Whittington told him that Gill died in an accident Sunday morning at a well site where the two were spending time together.
Whittington reportedly works for an oil company, and told lawmen he was on the job performing some kind of well maintenance when Gill died.
Wroten said Whittington told authorities that her death was accidental, and occurred after she came into contact with well machinery.
The Amite and Wilkinson county sheriff’s departments, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s Office have been collecting evidence and investigating the crime scenes.
“We will have more information as this plays out. But we aren’t going to release any information that hasn’t been confirmed,” Wroten said Wednesday.
