VIDALIA — Youth was served in Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium Saturday morning when four 8-and-under Miss-Lou football teams battled one another for two 20-minute periods.
One side of the field featured a scrappy Crofford Welding Tigers taking on a gritty Tensas State Buccaneer team that struggled to tackle the likes of JaKiree Fortune, Kristian O’Steen, Kaden Trahern, Will Wiley and Lawson Reyes. O’Steen scored the second touchdown of the game, after making a nice run where he reversed the field and made several defenders miss. O’Steen, who is Block High School starting quarterback Vyn’Quez O’Steen’s cousin, was more than humble after the game.
“This is my favorite sport,” said O’Steen, not willing to admit that he made some nice cutback moves on the gridiron.
While Fortune, O’Steen, Trahern, Wiley and Devon Goodwin each had touchdown scores in a 32-0 victory, the McDonald Collision Saints and Attorney Walker Bulldogs were engaged in a defensive struggle.
Two long touchdown runs by DeJuan Culbert proved to be the difference in a 13-2 win for the Bulldogs. Culbert was fired up after the game, enjoying a big team win.
“That’s my sport,” said Culbert, who loves playing football on Saturdays. “I play because I’m good at that sport.”
Saints quarterback Scott Gwin take his responsibilities under center seriously, raising his voice at the line of scrimmage so everyone on the team can know to get down in a three-point stance during the pre-snap. But that’s not his favorite part of the playing the position, though.
“Sometimes I get to run up the middle and knock through people,” Gwin said. “My favorite part is being on defense because I get to run into people.”
Playoffs begin Nov. 3 for ages 8 and under, while 10 and under and 13 and under will begin their playoffs Saturday.
