NATCHEZ — For David King, his message to his (8-1) ACCS Rebels this week is simple, “there’s nothing scarier than going against a team with its back against the wall.”

Hosting a 3-6 Brookhaven Academy Friday, ACCS is facing a Cougar team that is forced to win to make the playoffs.

“They have 13 seniors, and they realize this could be it,” King said. “Sometimes that can be a very dangerous thing.”

With a victory Friday, ACCS would win back-to-back district championships for the first time in school history. Last season, the Rebels won the district title for the first time in 31 years.

“I’ve been so spoiled that I don’t think about district championships as much, but this is a big deal to our kids,” King said. “I probably need to be more excited about it, but I have bigger goals in mind.”

Though King’s mindset is completely on Friday’s game, he said it would be “fun” to watch the MAIS tally up all of the power points and put together playoff matchups following the game’s outcome. Hopefully for King, the playoff seeding will occur after his team puts together its best performance of the year.

“That’s something we’re still waiting on,” King said. “With all of the media today, these kids generally knew that we were superior to our previous four opponents. But now they know that we’re facing a very dangerous team Friday.”

Though the Rebels have yet to put together that perfect game King is looking for, ACCS has limited its penalties and turnovers in the past few games, which is something King hopes to build on going into the playoffs next week.

As for the game plan, King is going to let Brookhaven decide what he does on offense.

“I’m just going to take what they give us,” King said. “That’s how I always come into the game.”
