SEMINARY — A shocker took place in the first round of the Class 3A South State Playoffs as Jefferson County, which had to defeat Franklin County a week ago just to get in, upset Region 8-3A champion Seminary Friday night 28-23.

“The defense stepped up and made some big plays. We were able to convert turnovers into points,” Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said.

Wells finished with 185 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He had a 93-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and the game-winning 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Tenner completed 8 of 15 passes for 120 yards and one interception with a touchdown pass to Nazarius King. He also had eight carries for 85 yards and one touchdown.

The Tigers finished with 11 first downs, 390 yards of total offense, just one turnover and only three penalties for 35 yards.

Another key to Jefferson County’s win was the effort of senior linebacker Marcus Snyder, who had 25 tackles, two sacks and one interception. Jefferson County will host Morton next Friday at 7 p.m. in the second round.
