VIDALIA — A chase for a man accused of shooting an Alabama police officer started in Concordia Parish and ended in LaSalle Parish Sunday.

LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Jay King said that Matthew Wright, who fired at and hit a Montgomery Police Department officer Sunday morning, was in custody.

Wright was eventually apprehended after a chase that began when Ferriday Police Department officers spotted a stolen car.

An alert for that car, Vidalia Assistant Police Chief Bruce Wiley said, went out after Wright attempted to use a stolen debit card at Delta Bank in Vidalia.

The car sped through Concordia and Catahoula parishes, but was slowed by a roadblock in LaSalle Parish. Police fired several rounds into the car after Wright allegedly tried to run over a police officer.

The chase ended in LaSalle Parish. Wright was arrested and taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound.

Montgomery Department of Public Safety Director Chris Murphy says the officer was undergoing surgery Sunday and was expected to recover.
