NATCHEZ — Next week is fire prevention week, and fire departments all over Adams County are working hard to get the word out about fire safety.

The Natchez Fire Department will be handing out fire prevention brochures, caps, stickers, coloring books and balloons at Walmart and the Natchez Mall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

NFD Capt. Aaron Wesley said this month the NFD will conduct home inspections for people in the county and the city upon request.

Firefighters will check for fire hazards and fire alarms to make sure they are in working order.

“Over 50 percent of people’s lives are saved because of smoke detectors,” Wesley said.

Wesley said one of the biggest concerns the fire department has seen recently is the failure to report suspicious burning smells.

“If you smell something, don’t leave it to chance,” he said. “Call the fire department.”

Residents of Adams County can set up their home inspection with the NFD by calling 601-442-3685 or 601-442-3684.
