Baldwin, La. — Though it wasn’t pretty, the Ferriday Trojans picked up a 28-15 win on the road against a struggling West St. Mary’s football team.
Riding the back of Dontrell Domino, who rushed 27 times for 198 yards and two touchdowns, the Trojans were able to muster enough offensive power to hold off West St. Mary.
“West St. Mary were a decent football team, but we should have jumped out to an early lead,” said Cummings, whose offense struggled with penalties and turnovers to start the game. “I can’t tell you what the problem is right now. It was one of those games where everyone struggled to focus.”
Where the Trojans lacked offensively, Cummings said his team made up for defensively with a stout performance by several Trojan defenders. Cummings singled out Shannon Morales’ performance at linebacker.
“Shannon played big,” Cummings said. “We got some key stops on defense. We had a good game plan, and the players executed. We hit them in the mouth.”
The defense allowed only 13 points, as two of West St. Mary’s points came on a safety.
Morales and J’Veion Hardaway caught touchdown passes in the win for the Trojans. Ronald Williams, who threw an interception, struggled to get into a rhythm with the offense.
“There were a few throws he forced,” Cummings said. “We ask him to manage the game, and he has to get mentally focused during the game.”
With Domino’s 198 rushing performance, the senior running back is less than 100 yards away from breaking 1,000 rushing yards on the season. Cummings said Domino’s rushing yards are a credit to the hard work he puts in.
“We want to give the line credit too,” Cummings said. “The more help we get from the offensive line the more successful we will be.”
With the win, the Trojans improve to 3-2.
