FERRIDAY — Don’t yell “Bingo!” just yet.

The ordinance that passed Tuesday allowing video bingo in the Town of Ferriday was vetoed nearly as fast as it was passed.

Less than 24 hours after the ordinance was put in place, Mayor Glen McGlothin exercised his final authority.

“I think it is in the best interest of the town to veto it,” he said. “It is in my opinion that that any form of gambling requiring town approval is simply an exploitation of the neediest in our community.”

McGlothin also said the ordinance was too broad in the first place.

“This ordinance didn’t say anything,” he said. “What about license and locations? Where does the money go? What fines or penalties are involved? There are things here that just need answering.”

McGlothin said the ordinance needs more information regarding licensing procedures, license requirements, costs of licenses, acceptable locations for the machines, collection and audit for charitable donations, designation of which charities are to benefit and fines for violations.

“You can’t just pass a two-paragraph ordinance with nothing in it,” he said.

McGlothin said video bingo is not something Ferriday needs.

“There are healthier and less controversial avenues to provide revenue to the town,” he said. “I just don’t think this is the best ordinance for Ferriday.”

Banks, who offered the motion for video bingo at the meeting, said he had no comment on the mayor’s veto until all of the particulars have been handled.

McGlothin said the issue will be brought up again at the December aldermen meeting.

The board of aldermen passed the ordinance in a 3-1 vote Tuesday night, with Elijah “Stepper” Banks, Gail Pryor and Gloria Lloyd voting in support of it.

Somer Lewis voted against the ordinance and Johnnie Brown abstained.
