NATCHEZ — If only an Adams County Jail inmate had two quarters to make a phone call, he might not be facing more time behind bars.

Jonesville resident James Keith Mays, 39, was charged with destroying public property Tuesday when deputies discovered pieces of the county’s video visitation system in a toilet and in one of the jail’s cell blocks, Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said.

Mays is suspected of destroying an iPad and the kiosk to which it was attached after he tried to break into the system to avoid paying for a visitation call.

The video visitation service allows inmates to visit with families and friends anywhere in the United States using the video kiosk in one of the jail’s cell blocks. The visitation service is fee based and costs 50 cents per minute for a maximum of 20 minutes.

“Deputies found parts (of the iPad and kiosk) that he flushed in a toilet, and they found some parts scattered in the cell block,” Mayfield said.

The estimated damage is $1,500, Mayfield said.

Mays was originally booked into the jail in November on grand larceny and burglary charges.
