WOODVILLE — Rodney Boyd had what head coach Kyle White described as “a breakout game” for Wilkinson County Christian Academy as the Rams upended the Porter’s Chapel Academy Eagles 22-6 Friday night in a key MAIS District 4-A game for both teams.
Boyd scored all three touchdowns for WCCA and finished with 215 yards rushing on 15 carries and led the defense with 13 total tackles.
“Rodney had the best game I’ve seen a young man have,” White said. “Just an absolutely fantastic game.”
But it wasn’t just Boyd who was instrumental in this big game. It was a defense that held Porter’s Chapel to just 220 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers. Sam Nicholas not only had a forced fumble on defense, he also blocked a punt.
It was Mason Contine, who had 11 carries for 47 yards to go with seven tackles. Caleb Poole and Luke Littleton each had an interception. Hayden Patterson had a fumble recovery.
“We played good defense tonight,” White said. “We still gave up too many (passing) yards. We had two starters out. We had to adapt how we play defense. They showed some potential of being a great defense.”
After the first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie, Boyd scored on a 59-yard run and Poole caught a 2-point conversion pass from Hutch Holden for an 8-0 Rams lead with 10:00 left in the second quarter. Boyd later scored on a 47-yard run with just 29 seconds to go until halftime and he added the 2-point conversion run and WCCA went into halftime with a surprising 16-0 lead.
Just past the midway point of the fourth quarter, Porter’s Chapel finally got on the scoreboard when Zac Morgan connected with Taylor Rushing on a 43-yard pass. However, the try for 2 failed.
Any thoughts of an Eagles comeback came to an end on Boyd’s 30-yard touchdown run with 1:47 remaining.
The win was special for the Rams in that it was their first win of the season, it was homecoming, and it moved them into a tie for first place in the district standings with Trinity Episcopal.
“It’s huge. Getting that first district win was big. And getting that first win of the season – it’s icing on the cake,” White said. “Homecoming’s a whole different aspect. Kids did a great job of being mature.”
WCCA (1-4, 1-0) next plays at Central Private School at 7 p.m. Friday.
