NATCHEZ — The Trinity Saints season came to an end with a 5-4 victory against Tensas Academy Wednesday night, and several Saints were honored with all-district recognition following the Saints’ season finale.
Saints’ Kayla Gilmore, Tali Beard and Kailey Hutchings were placed on the first team, Hannah Fitt, Sloane Young and Michaela Hutchins earned second-team honors and Kaitlyn Lees, Jasmine Ivory and Kyler Parks were honorable mentions.
“It’s one of those things where the girls see their hard work rewarded,” said head coach Miranda Smith.
Smith singled out Kailey’s performance this season, as she was thrust into the lineup as the Saints’ main starting pitcher and battled a back injury throughout the year.
“She showed a lot of grit and determination this season,” Smith said.
Smith was equally complimentary of Beard, who was the Saints’ leadoff batter and set the tone throughout the season.
“I knew every time she stepped up to the plate that she was going to produce a big hit,” Smith said. “She was the only girl who cried when we lost to Franklin Academy the other night. That really shows how much pride she puts into playing softball.”
The win against Tensas in the season finale was a dramatic one. The Saints trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning before Ivory tied the game on a 2-RBI triple. Ivory later scored on a sacrifice fly in the inning to give Trinity the lead and the win.
“We came out a little sluggish offensively, but we’re coming off of a game where we faced a hard throwing pitcher from Franklin Academy yesterday,” Smith said. “It was hard for us to adjust early on, but we did when it counted.”
The Saints finish their season with an 11-12 record.
