JONESVILLE — In a game that featured two grind-it-out offenses, it was White Castle that got the yards and the points when they needed it most.

The Bulldogs scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter that chewed up most of the clock as the upset the Block Bears 36-19 in the second round of the LHSAA Class 1A playoffs.

Both teams showcased their running games, combining for 645 yards on the ground and seven rushing touchdowns.

Tyree Brackens, a Division I prospect, lead the Bulldogs with 284 yards and three touchdowns. Brackens seemed unstoppable, averaging 10.14 yards per carry.

“He’s good. We couldn’t stop him. Nobody’s stopped him all year,” Block head coach Benny Vault said.

Brackens had 116 yards just in the first half. However, the second half is where he exploded.

“(Brackens is) the real deal. He’s the best back I’ve seen in years. He’s not as fast as Stevan Ridley, but he’s got good vision,” Vault said.

Block’s running backs, Preston Bowman and Vashawn Davis, combined for 324 yards on 52 carries and scored three touchdowns. With both teams offenses’ performing identically, the defense and special teams became the deciding factor in the Bulldogs’ victory.

Just before halftime, after a 56-yard touchdown run by Brackens, White Castle attempted an onside kick that sailed over a Block player’s head, falling right into the hands of a Bulldog player, giving White Castle the ball at the Bears’ 35-yard line with 1:40 left in the second quarter.

White Castle took advantage of the miscue on the kickoff return, scoring through the air on an 11-yard pass from Ronald Martin to Isaac O’Bear as the half expired.

“That’s where the momentum changed. That made the score to 14-7,” Vault said.

Before the Brackens touchdown run, Block led 7-0 and had the ball with an attempt to push the lead to 14-0 heading into the half. Block also received the kickoff in the third quarter. However, instead of scoring, freshman quarterback Trevor Vault threw an interception at the Bulldog 45-yard lines, which lead to Brackens’ long touchdown run, and the eventual onside kick that lead to another Bulldog score.

“Special teams killed us. So did the interception. It gave them momentum,” Vault said.

The interception and the special teams miscue were the mistakes that led to the loss as well as not stopping Brackens. The interception was the only turnover in the game.

“They put 11 in the box. We can’t throw the ball this year, but we will next year. Our quarterback (Trevor Vault) is a freshman this year,” Vault said.

Block scored on the opening possession in the third quarter on a 1-yard Bowman run, but special teams failed them again.

The extra point was blocked, as well as the extra point after the other third quarter score, a 1-yard run by Davis.

Block played well for three quarters, but White Castle controlled the clock in the fourth, scoring twice and putting the game away after going up 17 with 2:42 left in the game.

The 32-yard touchdown run by Brackens sealed it.
