JONESVILLE — A Catahoula Parish man is in federal custody following the weeklong search for explosives around his residence that uncovered dozens of bombs.

Highways in Jonesville were shut down Aug. 25 following the arrest of Bill Womack, 55, who was charged with possession of explosives and having a concealed weapon after Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an explosion in a vehicle on U.S. 84.

No injuries were reported in the explosion.

After the highways were reopened the search for bombs continued through Friday with the assistance of Federal the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Louisiana State Police.

Catahoula Parish Sheriff James Kelly said Womack was transferred to federal custody Tuesday.

The search rendered “well over 30” explosives resembling home-made pipe bombs, most of which were found in a building used as a camp on Womack’s family property, Kelly said.

The sheriff said investigators have found no indication that other explosives have been set off, and have not yet been able to determine why Womack was apparently stockpiling the devices.

Womack has a federal arraignment set for Friday in Shreveport.

A spokesman for the ATF could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
