NATCHEZ — One man is in custody and another in surgery after what appears to be a heated argument over a jacket.

Adams Country Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said Willie Thomas, 19, 125 Tubman Circle, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly shooting 27-year-old Keith Matthews.

Mayfield said he believes Thomas used a .410 shotgun with squirrel shot and shot Matthews once in the right side of the abdomen at approximately 2:30 Saturday afternoon at Thomas’ residence.

“It appears that an argument over a jacket happened today and escalated,” Mayfield said.

Matthews, 135 Tubman Circle, was transported to Natchez Community Hospital where he was taken into surgery.

Mayfield said he was unsure about the extent of Matthews’ injuries, but Matthews was alert and answering questions at the hospital.
