JONESVILLE — Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies continued working Monday night to inspect various structures in Catahoula Parish for suspected explosives.
Catahoula Parish Sheriff James Kelly said agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as Louisiana State Police troopers, were searching buildings in Harrisonburg Monday they believed contained explosives.
The searches came after parish deputies arrested Bill Womack of Jonesville at approximately 8 a.m. Monday.
Womack was originally charged with carrying of a concealed weapon, but Kelly said deputies later learned of the possible explosives through questioning.
Kelly said he couldn’t disclose why police were searching through those specific buildings, but did say none of the buildings were in highly populated areas.
“Our guys are going through each house right now we think might contain explosives,” Kelly said. “Through the information we gathered, we’re searching these houses to be certain of what’s inside.”
A suspected explosive device was found in a vehicle parked outside a retail business near Jonesville earlier in the day.
The device was detonated at some point and resulted in the Louisiana State Police being contacted to deploy a bomb-dismantling robot, according to an LSP alert.
As the agents worked to locate the other explosives, portions of U.S. 84 were rerouted to Louisiana 8.
The roads were later opened as agencies narrowed their search to the Harrisonburg area, Kelly said.
