FAYETTE — The Jefferson County High School Tigers will look to avenge last year’s season-opening 36-20 loss on the road to South Pike High School when they play host the Eagles with the kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday.

Even though South Pike started the 2013 season with that win at home, it would be the Eagles’ only victory of the season. They ended up losing their final nine games to finish 1-9. Jefferson County wasn’t much better as the Tigers were 3-7-1.

Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said he has seen some film on South Pike. He added that the two teams are familiar with each other because the Tigers and the Eagles have played each other the last couple of years.

“They’re a 3-4 defense and a wing-T offensive,” Herrington said. “They’re familiar with what we do offensively and defensively, and we’re familiar with what they do offensively and defensively. It’ll be a good match-up.”

Herrington said the one thing about South Pike’s offense that concerns him the most is the speed from the running back position. As for the Eagles’ defense, it’s the blitz.

“They like to do the sweep, the jet, the counter,” Herrington said. “They have some speedy guys. We have to rally to the ball and tackle hard. They only have a three-front, but they can send some multiple blitzes and you don’t know where they will come from. Our offensive line will have to know their assignments.”

Jefferson County participated in the Vicksburg jamboree last Saturday, and Herrington said there were a few things that really impressed him — the defense and the play of quarterback Rashard Brown.

“Defensively, I was impressed with the way they played down to down,” Herrington said. “We gave up one big play. Other than that, I was impressed with how they played down to down. We hope to add to that and be a bit more efficient and not give up the big play. Rasheem Carter, I like his intensity. He made some big hits in the game, and we need that during the season.”

As for Brown’s play during the jamboree, Herrington noted, “He did an outstanding job. He made good reads. He threw the ball very precise. He managed the clock very well. I was impressed with his play.”

Herrington said he was also pleased the offense did not turn the ball over and had few penalties.

As for what else the Tigers will be working on in practice to get ready for South Pike, Herrington said. “Our intensity. Our sense of urgency. Not waiting on the next man to make the play. That’ll be very important, that we don’t set back. That we bring the action. Being the aggressors on offense, defense and special teams.”

Centreville Academy at Brookhaven Academy

CENTREVILLE — The Centreville Academy Tigers will look to start the 2014 season the same way the 2013 began — with a win over the Brookhaven Academy Cougars. But this time, they will have to do it on the road.

And if last Friday’s Parklane jamboree is any indication, Centreville may have a harder time doing so than it did in a 35-14 win over Brookhaven Academy a year ago. Tigers assistant coach Brian Stutzman said that everyone on the team needs to get better.

“They all made mistakes. Just made a lot of mistakes as a team and individually. We’ve got to correct those mistakes and get better,” Stutzman said. “We were able to get some game action. We were able to find some points to coach.”

Stutzman noted that among those mistakes were fumbles, penalties and missed assignments that usually occur in a jamboree. He added that those things can be straightened out and that Centreville can play a mistake-free game against the Cougars.

He added that even though the entire team has got to improve, including the coaches, the coaching staff led by head coach Bill Hurst was pleased with the effort the players gave.

Even though Centreville didn’t play as smoothly as it could have during the Parklane Jamboree, Stutzman said that practice has gone well this week.

“We’ve have a good week so far,” Stuzman said. “We’re trying to get everybody in the right spots. It’s going good so far.”

Stutzman said they have some film on Brookhaven Academy from the jamboree games against Porter’s Chapel and St. Aloysius.

Kickoff at Brookhaven Academy is set for 7 p.m. Friday.

Franklin County at Brookhaven

MEADVILLE — The Franklin County Bulldogs will be looking to give first-year head coach Anthony Hart his first win of the season this Friday when they visit the Brookhaven High School Panthers.

Franklin County will also be looking for a measure of revenge against Brookhaven after the Class 3A Bulldogs lost to the Class 5A Panthers at home 41-13 in the first week of the 2013 season. But it won’t be easy.

“When you’re playing a good team and a school larger than you, everything concerns you,” Hart said. “They have a good offense, good defense. Special teams is quality. We’re playing a complete team. Their overall team speed on both sides of the ball is impressive. That’s something we’re going to have to control.”

Last Friday, the Bulldogs participated in the Lawrence County Jamboree and lost to host Lawrence County High School 20-0. Despite being shut out, Hart said there were some positives things he liked and there were some areas that still need to work on. But he would not get into specifics.

“We saw some good things and we saw some bad things. The bad things, we’re going to get better,” Hart said. “At times, we did some things that were positive. At times, we did some things that were negative. We’re going to work on the negatives and turn them into positives.”

Hart said that practice has gone well so far this week, adding, “The kids are working hard. They’re doing what we ask them to do each day.”

Kickoff between Franklin County and Brookhaven High School will be at 7 p.m.
